Who, or what, exactly is a "Man Repeller?" Leandra Medine, the force behind The Man Repeller, defines it as: " outfitting oneself in a sartorially offensive mode that may result in repelling members of the opposite sex. Such garments include but are not limited to harem pants, boyfriend jeans, overalls (see: human repelling), shoulder pads, full length jumpsuits, jewelry that resembles violent weaponry and clogs."
In short, you wear what you want you want to wear, for yourself and no one else. While the aesthetic may seem off to some, the sentiment of careless confidence has allowed Medine a cult-like following since creating her wildly popular blog back in 2010.
So it was no surprise that when the Man Repeller herself came to her one-and-only DC appearance at the W hotel, she was met with close to a thousand fashionable attendees, all vying for a glimpse and chat with the fashion icon.
The special occasion? A book signing party for Medine's debut book, Man Repeller: Seeking Love . Finding Overalls.
DC is a hotbed of fashionistas- stylists and bloggers, photographers and style setters. Besides getting autographed copies of Medine's book, guests were able to sip drinks and cocktails while listening to guest DJ Hannah Bronfman, who also happens to be the co-founder of the app Beautified .
Guests got glam at the Nectar skin, Bliss Spa massage, and Ipsa for Hair bars. They also got a chance to win a $250 C. Wonder gift card, by heading over to the C. Wonder arm bar and snapping their heavily-adorned wrists for Instagram.
As a photographer, it was sensory overload with all the great style and fashion to see at every turn. Even better? When you work in the fashion world, you know how to pose in a picture (thank you for knowing your angles!) :)
Great event, fun night, and just goes to show that a wee little pastime can grow into something massively successful. And who doesn't want to work in what they love? :)
